Frequently Asked
Questions

Everything you need to know about training, membership, camps, and getting started at SFE.

Getting Started

Not at all. Our Beginner programs are designed for athletes with zero fencing background. We start with footwork, bladework fundamentals, and safety. Everything you need to build a solid foundation from day one.

We welcome fencers starting at age 7 through adult. Youth programs are tailored for younger athletes, while our adult track focuses on technique, fitness, and competitive development for 18+ members.

We recommend beginners start with Foil, as it teaches clean technique and right-of-way rules that transfer well to Saber and Epee. That said, our coaches will assess your movement style and help you find the best fit during your first sessions.

Wear athletic clothing and flat-soled sneakers. SFE provides all equipment (mask, jacket, glove, and weapon) for new members during their first month. You do not need to purchase any gear to get started.

Membership & Registration

We offer three monthly membership tiers: Foundation ($225/mo, 2x per week), Club ($375/mo, 3x per week, most popular), and Performance ($600/mo, unlimited sessions plus 1 guest pass per week). All memberships include access to open bouting sessions.

Training & Programs

New members complete a brief assessment during their first session. Coaches evaluate footwork, coordination, and prior athletic background to place you in the appropriate level: Beginner, Intermediate, or Competitive. Placement is reviewed every 8 weeks.

Open Bouting is an unstructured sparring session open to all members at Intermediate level and above. It's a chance to apply technique in live bouts, work on strategy, and fence with members across different levels. Sessions are included in all membership plans.

Yes. Our Competitive track is designed for athletes pursuing regional and national USA Fencing tournaments. Coaches provide individualized bout analysis, tournament prep, and conditioning programming for competitive members.

We cap group sessions at 10 athletes per coach to ensure quality instruction and individual attention. Competitive-level athletes have access to smaller group and semi-private sessions.

Summer Academy (Camps)

Summer Academy camps are open to youth athletes ages 7–17. Campers are grouped by age and experience level so instruction is always appropriate and engaging.

Standard camp hours run 10 AM – 4 PM. We offer extended care options: Early Drop-Off from 9 AM (+$15/day) and Late Pick-Up until 5 PM (+$30/day). Extended care must be added during registration.

Camp fees cover all instruction, equipment use, and daily activities. Campers should bring their own lunch, water bottle, and athletic clothing. SFE provides all fencing gear.

Absolutely. Summer Academy is designed to welcome first-time fencers. Coaches introduce the sport from the ground up in a fun, supportive environment. No prior experience is needed.
